Children may be tempted to download mod APKs, cracked apps or “free premium” apps to access games, paid features or content without payment. These apps are often shared through websites, social-media links or group chats rather than official app stores.
Although they may seem harmless, unofficial apps can contain harmful software that steals passwords, accesses private photos or messages, collects mobile money details, or takes over gaming, email and social-media accounts.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to guide children to:
- Download apps only from official app stores, such as Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Microsoft Store.
- Avoid mod APKs, cracked apps and links offering paid features for free.
- Check an app’s reviews and reputation online before installing it.
- Never enter passwords, mobile money PINs or other sensitive information into unfamiliar apps.
- Keep devices and apps up to date.
If an unofficial app has already been installed, it should be removed immediately. Any passwords entered into the app should be changed using a trusted device, and related accounts should be checked for unfamiliar activity.
